Departure

We trust that most of you have been enjoying the hot summer thus far?  We've certainly had our share of tropical weather this year. To think, in a few short months we'll all be complaining that it's too chilly out. Oh well, c'est la vie.  This months "Enroute" features the latest news and developments for members of the YYZ Airport Watch.

We would like to remind everyone of the phone numbers below which are to be used to report suspicious activity. In NO WAY should these numbers be used maliciously or in hopes of gaining favourable advantage while out at Pearson Airport.  Remember to treat all security officials with respect and obey their instructions.

New Members:

We are happy to welcome 16 new members to the YYZ Airport Watch group that signed up on July 16th. Our membership now sits at 95. We do still have a small number of people that filled out the membership form but have yet to attend a membership sign up meeting. The committee directors are doing their best to accommodate this group.

Piedmont-Hawthorne:

Some of you may have seen that Piedmont-Hawthorne have put up an opaque covering on their fence. This was not done to annoy us specifically, but rather offer their clients improved privacy. Andy Cline had a brief meeting with Piedmont-Hawthorne explaining the YYZ Airport Watch concept. They seemed genuinely interested in learning more. A formal meeting will take place in the coming weeks to fully brief them on Airport Watch and how a successful relationship now exists in Ottawa between their airport watch members and local FBO's. We hope that in the near future a cooperative agreement can be worked out with Piedmont-Hawthorne that parallels the arrangements at Ottawa.

Peel Regional Police:

Over the past 4-5 weeks Andy Cline has had several discussions with Peel Regional Police firming up our relationship with them and discussing security checks for our members. We are happy to report that progress was made on both fronts. We have been informed that Peel Regional Police are willing to do the security checks for our members. This will once again require all members to fill out another disclosure form. Once the form is finalized we will contact all members on how we will proceed with this. As you can appreciate officials at both Peel Regional Police and the GTAA have had their hands full dealing with the Air France accident. As a result the airport watch committee have decided to wait a few weeks before we contact them again. As a footnote, we have not received any word from officials as to when Convair Dr will re-open. Some of you often use Convair Dr as a means to get from one side of the airport to the other. We ask that all members remain patient and not to push or test the limits of the current restrictions in that area.

Airport Watch Dashboard Banners:

We have been informed that our "Dashboard Banners" have been printed and will be ready for distribution shortly. Basically they are 8.5 x 11 horizontally folded tent cards. Members can place them on the front or rear dashboard of your car while out at YYZ. They have our groups logo and "Airport Watch" in bold letters on one side, and the emergency contact numbers on the other. We will let members know when and where they can be picked up.

Just a reminder that all items that are issued to members remain the property of the "YYZ Airport Watch" and should not be defaced or altered in any way. As well, no items shall be lent out to anyone at anytime. Members violating the above will have their membership revoked.

CFB Trenton Tour:

Plans are in the works for a tour of CFB Trenton and possibly Mountainview. This tour is being arranged for members only of both the YOW and YYZ Airport Watch groups. Attendance will be limited to about 25 from each group and participants will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Trenton. It is expected that the date will be early to mid September. As soon as we have all the details we will let you know.

The YYZ Airport Watch group committee are very pleased with the progress thus far.  We appreciate your patience and understanding as we pursue this initiative forward step by step. We would also like to thank the GTAA and Peel Regional Police for working with us to see that our program is a success.

We do want to remind all members, that while progress continues to be made, it by no means gives any one of us the freedom to do as we please.
ALL RULES AND REGULATIONS MUST BE OBEYED

Members are to treat authorities with respect and obey their instructions.

Until next time, your continued support, cooperation and patience is much appreciated.
